About the Curriculum
The Middle School Engagement Initiative: 2024 Curriculum, developed by Howard University College of Medicine and Infinite Legacy in partnership with Charles Hart Middle School, offers a comprehensive educational program on organ donation and transplantation for seventh-grade health and science students.
The curriculum includes four 50-minute lesson plans covering the basics of organ and tissue transplants, addressing common myths and misconceptions, and exploring career opportunities in the field. Students engage in a final project by creating poster presentations to share their knowledge and dispel myths.
Additionally, the program features personal testimonies from transplant recipients, field trips for hands-on learning at Infinite Legacy, and pre- and post-curriculum surveys to measure changes in student perceptions. This initiative aims to inspire more students, especially those of color, to consider careers in the donation and transplantation field, and can serve as a model for other schools seeking to promote organ donation awareness.
